STRING THEORY
“A theoretical framework proposing that the fundamental constituents of the universe are not zero-dimensional point particles, but tiny vibrating strings of energy”.
The Science
String Theory is the idea that the smallest building blocks of the universe many not be tiny particles, but incredibly small vibrating strings.
Quantum physics - the broader framework in which string theory operates introduces probability and uncertainty at the microscopic level. We cannot always predict exactly what a quantum system will do - instead, we can describe the probabilities of different outcomes.
At the smallest scales, nature is not necessarily a perfectly predictable system. What we observe can emerge from vibration, probability, movement and countless possible interactions.
The Creative Connection
“Controlled Conditions. Unpredictable Outcomes”
When creating abstract images, and using techniques of intentional camera movement and in-camera multiple exposure, a strong connection lies in the relationship between control and chance. We deliberately move the camera in a particular way, select our shutter speed, and make multiple exposures - but we cannot completely predict what the final outcome will be.
This is where the photographic process can echo the idea string theory - We, as photographers establish the conditions, but the final outcome emerges through a combination of intention and unpredictability.
This body of botanical work, “String Theory” explores a photographic interpretation of the physics and scientific reasoning behind string theory.
