'WOODLANDS' By Hans Strand

Foreword: By Martin rak

ISBN: 978-1-9193578-4-3

Photographing forests and trees is perhaps the most complex challenge a landscape photographer can undertake. Forests are, by their very nature, places of untamed chaos. Finding compositions that truly work therefore requires both imagination and precision. To photograph a forest, you must become one with it. You must become a hunter armed with a camera rather than a rifle. The chaos that at first seems impossible to organize can, like the Gordian Knot, suddenly unravel when your senses are tuned to the right frequency. More often than not, it takes time to absorb the forest and understand its geometry. It is this geometry—its lines, shapes, and relationships—that must be mastered within the four corners of the frame. For me, those four corners form the foundation of a strong composition. They should be free from elements with excessive visual weight, such as bright highlights or deep shadows that disrupt the harmony of the image. A pale branch protruding into one corner instantly becomes an eye magnet, upsetting the balance. I therefore pay meticulous attention to the corners whenever I photograph. The most effective corners are short diagonals that gently lead the viewer’s eye into the image. They guide the gaze while giving the composition stability.
