'SYLT'
Foreword By: Francesco Carovillano
For thousands of years now the island of Sylt has been an ever changing area. Ongoing loss of land due to storm tides, shifting dunes and the intertidal ecosystem of the Wadden Sea have formed and at the same time also threatened the island since its separation from the mainland. Dating back to the 19th century, wooden groynes have been built as an attempt to tame the strong currents of the North Sea.
Their remains are of particular interest for me as witnesses of the efforts to protect the island against the forces of nature. Together with the seemingly eternal roar of the surf they are convincing symbols of steadiness and unwaveringnes to my eye.
The compilation of these images was eventually inspired by the experience of several days in dense fog on the island. Sky, land and sea seemed to merge, and all dimensions were only sketchy. I tried to convey these strong impressions through my photographs of Sylt in this book.
